Baby, it's Cold Outside...Great Time to read...The Mitten

What have we been doing this week!?!  Anything and everything that is related to the story, The Mitten.  Here are some quick pictures to share!    

I got this idea from www.kinderbykim.com website or should I say...Kindergals.....a couple of years ago.  My students love to read the story over and over during their academic free choice time!  

When I was in college this was one of the activities I made for our Reading Class.  I still use it every year and the students ask me all week....Can we retell the story again?!

We read the emergent reader, The Tale of The Mitten, by BZ Teacher together as a class.  If you would like a copy of the book click {here now} !  It is so cute, and she has 3 different versions for you to use in your classroom!

Today was my student teachers last day in our classroom.  She will be missed!  Here is the little goodie bag she gave each student.  On the back it said..."Owl" Miss You!

The Mitten

I have always enjoyed acting out the story, The Mitten.  The students really get into the story by acting like the animal and squeezing into the mitten.  Yes....all my students that have a headband can fit in the mitten at once!  The students need to take off their shoes before they can crawl in and listen to the story quietly.  They sure like to giggle in there...but isn't that what makes learning fun!  I made the mitten out of 2 white sheets and sewed them together.  I used headbands make each animal.  See pictures below!

1 Mitten...2 Mittens...3 Mittens..Snowball Fight!

  I found these adorable mitten cut~outs at School House in Green Bay      (while I was visiting my bestie!).  I had to have them and my brain was spinning just thinking of ideas on how to use them in my literacy centers.  Here is what I came up with...
 

TSW...pick a snowball with a picture on it and hang it on the first mitten.  Then the students will build the word by putting a snowball letter on each mitten.  I have Velcro on the mittens and snowballs to stick together!

Question for my “Smartie” bloggers…Would you use words like tiger, shark, or truck for this activity?  If the students sound out the word it will not be spelled correctly, but I am sure that my students who came into kindergarten reading would be able to hear all the sounds in the words.  I feel like such a “Dum ~ Dum” sometimes…but I really want your opinion.  Thank You!

The Mitten Big Book

I got this idea from www.kinderbykim.com website.  I liked it so much, I wanted to share!  The students will color in the characters and write the sentence on each mitten.  I have copies of the animal characters blown up on my teacher website (www.luv2teach.shutterfly.com).  The story will be hung in the classroom for about 2 weeks to read.  Then, I will make it into a big book to take home and read with their family.

The Mitten

I enjoy reading the story, The Mitten, every year to my students.  The greatest part is acting it out!  In college, I made character headbands and a big mitten the animals (students) could crawl into.  I believe you can print off the character masks on Jan Brett's website.
