Power Readers

Our "Power Readers" are a great opportunity to practice reading high frequency words in context. 

The students took turns reading the
sentence out loud to their friends.
Then the class would
"echo read" the sentence. 

The students also worked on the
importance of pointing to words!

We recalled items in the "Power Reader"
and sounded out words together.

They could not wait to have a chance.
It made my heart smile!

At the end of the PowerPoint...there are simple questions to review phonemic awareness skills with the students. 

Then each student receives their own copy of the slideshow in the form of a little reader.  

The students had to highlight the word "This" in each sentence.  It was so nice seeing them work so hard at coloring their pictures.  

The students got to take home the emergent reader for further reinforcement!

Reading Rainforest

The students are GOING WILD for this reading area!   Can't hang items from your ceiling...no problem...take it to their level.  They are having just as much fun reading in this rainforest. 
This picture was taken in Mrs. Ramseier's Kindergarten classroom.  I bet she will be making one in my room next.  What are teaching partners for...right!?!

We are just sharing a fun hands-on way to help teach your students to "POINT TO WORDS" while reading! 

HINT ~ when you are finished working with the kiddos...put the cards into a Ziploc bag to keep the marshmallows squishy!

Power Readers

"How do you inspire your students to become Power Readers?"   "You use our PowerPoints in combination with our little readers!"

Here are some pictures of our students having a little sight word fun in our classroom.

As a large group the students are recalling things read about in the book and recording them on the white board.

As an extended activity, the students colored each sight words a different color. 

For added fun, I had the students put their hands on their heads and when I would say a sight word he/she would quickly point to the word in the book.

Our PowerPoint readers include a variety of sight words, color words, & number words.  The students need many opportunities to practice reading high frequency words in context.

After the students have had time to view/read the book in whole group and small group instruction time, you can send the emergent reader home for further reinforcement.  Students are so proud of their new reading skills and will enjoy reading it to their families.

Reading to the President

I was able to attend a fabulous conference yesterday called, Literacy Practices for 4K.  One of the greatest parts was being able to sit at a table with 5 other 4K teachers and share what we do in the classroom.  I did a lot of listening because I am new to this 4K thing...and let me tell you...I could not get enough of it!  

One of the ideas the presenter, Lori Jamison, shared with us was "Reading to the President...or your Principal...or your Friends...the ideas are endless"!  

Go read to the PRESIDENT!
