Monthly Writing Journals

I have decided to make monthly writing journals for my kindergarten kiddos to use next school year.  This way...they can go home each month, so their parents can see their child's writing ability as they grow.  Of course, I used D.J Inkers clip art (I am obsessed) to make the journals.  This will make you happy because I cannot sell them I just get to give them away for free.  You will have to go to my teacher website to get the PDF master copies under the writing tab.  SORRY!  Here is an example of my September Writing Journal.

Each month the journal cover contains different clip art and fonts.  I also made a girl and boy cover page for each month.  For the page that the students write on, I will start with a blank page so the students draw a picture and label.  Then, the students will write on a single line, and by the end of the year he/she will write on 3 lines.
What do you think?  Is their anything I should change or add?  Thank you for your time!

Amber

  2. Thanks Elisabeth! Journal topics are my next step in the making this summer. This past year, unless I told them to write about a topic, they wrote 1-3 sentences on whatever they wished. I have to say some students were very creative and some students tried to start every page with I like... If I find something while I am blogging, I will let you know!

  7. What about putting the month on the cover so the parent can keep track and the first page has a student self portrait with their signature, just a thought . These are adorable and I love the rubric. I have something similar but mine hook into OCR. I will send teachers here. thanks for being so generous....u rock!

  21. Hi Amber,
I love this and do this in my classroom. I know alot of my kids are writing on more than three lines by the end of the year. Maybe add lines on the back of the three lined page so they have that option for those advanced writers. :)
    Thank you for posting.

  24. Great journals! I do journals as well, and change it up by doing "photo friday". Each child has an envelope of photos of themselves when they were captured doing an activity or playing with a friend, ect. The photos are printed off on regular paper and addded to each childs folder. On Friday, instead of drawing a picture to write about, they choose and glue a photo from their envelope and write about what was happening in the photo. It's helps them to have the new topics to write about and looks so cute in the journals! :)
